What each source supports
  • A person must be registered as an iGaming supplier under section 49.2 of the Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Act before operating an iGaming site or providing goods or services to one in Alberta, subject to narrow exemptions such as iGaming workers. [1], [2], [3]
  • An operator must complete AGLC registration and due diligence, and then sign a commercial agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation, before it may accept deposits or take bets from Alberta players. [3], [4]
  • The minimum age to gamble on an iGaming site in Alberta is 18; the Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Act defines a 'minor' as a person under 18 years of age. [1], [3]
  • Registered iGaming operators must ensure games are provided only within Alberta and that only players physically located in Alberta can participate; the gaming system must block play when location cannot be verified, detect and block location-evasion methods (known VPNs/proxies, remote desktop, virtualization), and periodically re-verify player location. [5]
  • Alberta operates a single, centralized self-exclusion program administered by AGLC that covers both land-based gaming facilities and iGaming sites under one enrolment; registered operators must not permit a self-excluded person to play and must honour the exclusion. [2], [3], [6], [5]
  • Advertising and marketing materials (including algorithmic ads) that communicate gambling inducements, bonuses and credits are prohibited in Alberta, except on an operator's own gaming site and through direct marketing after the player has given express, opt-in consent that can be withdrawn at any time.   • AGLC's Standards and Requirements for Internet Gaming (SRIG) Standard 4.6.5 prohibits Alberta iGaming operators from offering certain categories of sport and event bets, including: bets on political events (e.g. elections, by-elections, leadership contests); bets on minor league sports in Canada, including the Canadian Hockey League (CHL); bets on assets and financial markets (e.g. stocks, bonds, currencies, real property); bets which mimic the structure of financial instruments, products or markets (including spread betting and contracts for difference); bets which expose players to losses greater than the amount wagered; and bets on synthetic lottery products or lottery outcomes.
